San Diego, California - San Diego State will hit the road in mid-December to face 2014 NCAA tournament participant Cincinnati on Wednesday, December 17. The game is set for a 9 p.m. ET start inside Fifth Third Arena and will air live on ESPN2.
The first-ever meeting will feature a pair of squads that finished the 2013-14 campaign ranked in both of the final top-25 polls. The Aztecs found themselves at No. 13 in the AP and No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Bearcats, meanwhile, closed the year at No. 15/22 after posting a 27-7 record.
Both teams were among the nation’s elite a season ago as they each enjoyed lengthy winning streaks, spent a significant time in the top 25, including the top 10, and captured their league’s regular-season title.
In 2013-14, San Diego State won 20 straight games at one point, spent the final 16 weeks ranked in the top 25, rising to as high as fifth, and won the outright Mountain West regular-season championship. Cincinnati, meanwhile, enjoyed a 14-game winning streak, was ranked the final 10 weeks of the campaign, climbing to as high as No. 7, and shared the American regular-season crown with Louisville.
The Aztecs are regarded as a preseason top-25 team heading in to the 2014-15 campaign, ranging anywhere from No. 9 (NBCSports.com’s Rob Dauster) to No. 21 (CBS Sports Network’s Jon Rothstein). SDSU returns three starters and eight letterwinners off last season’s squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in four years. San Diego State also welcomes a pair of Division I transfers and brings a consensus top-15 recruiting class into the fold.
SDSU’s non-conference schedule is still being finalized and will be released upon its completion. The Aztecs’ Mountain West slate, however, was revealed in late July and will begin at home on Dec. 31 vs. Air Force.
