San Diego, California - San Diego State, the back-to-back Mountain West champions, will be in action for the first time in 2014 on Friday night as it plays host to Cal State Fullerton. The exhibition is set for 7 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck and admission is free.
The Aztecs are a week into their training for the upcoming campaign and welcome back 14 letterwinners and six starters from a year ago. San Diego State also brings into the fold eight new players, including two with previous collegiate experience.
SDSU, which has advanced to the NCAA tournament in consecutive seasons, including 2012’s run to the Sweet 16, is coming off a season in which it finished 13-7-2 and 9-1 in the Mountain West. After starting the year 1-4-2, the Aztecs hit their stride in late September and closed the season by going 12-3, with the final loss coming to second-ranked UCLA in the NCAA tournament.
The Titans, meanwhile, enter 2014 as the reigning Big West champions after claiming the title on penalty kicks in both the Big West semifinals and final. Cal State Fullerton ultimately fell to Stanford on the road in the NCAA tournament to finish the year with an 8-7-7 record (3-3-2 Big West).
Last season, the same two teams met in exhibition action in Fullerton and battled to a scoreless draw.
The Aztecs open their regular-season schedule on Friday, Aug. 22, against Michigan State at SDSU Sports Deck. First tap is slated for 7 p.m. PT. The game marks the first of a season-opening four-game homestand. Following its date with the Spartans, SDSU welcomes UC Davis (Aug. 24, noon PT), UC Riverside (Aug. 29, 4 p.m. PT) and Michigan (Aug. 31, 7 p.m. PT) to Montezuma Mesa.
