San Diego, California - The San Diego State women’s tennis team will begin competition at the Mountain West Championships on Friday when the third-seeded Aztecs take on the winner of Wednesday’s match between San Jose State and Colorado State.
Friday’s events will kick off post season competition for SDSU.
Sixth-seeded San Jose State will enter the league championships with an 11-13 overall mark and a 1-3 conference record. The Spartans and San Diego State faced off on April 6 at Aztec Tennis Center where SDSU took the 5-2 decision. SJSU is coming off a two-match win streak including a win over conference foe, Nevada, at home. Most recently, the Spartans downed UC Davis, 4-3, in Davis, California.
Colorado State comes into the conference tournament seeded 11th with a 3-13 overall record and a 0-6 mark in league play. If the Aztecs and Rams meet on Friday, it will be the first time this season the two schools will face each other. The Rams are coming off a 7-0 loss to conference opponent Wyoming on April 19. SDSU has a firm grip on the overall series record over Colorado State, a perfect 20-0.
San Diego State will enter the conference championship with an 11-12 overall mark and 4-1 league record. The Aztecs last outing came at Las Vegas when they downed conference rival UNLV, 5-2. No. 43-ranked Laura Antonaña Iriarte defeated No. 68 Lucia Batta en route to the SDSU win which would be a factor in the Aztec senior garnering her fifth Mountain West Player of the Week award of the season.
