San Diego, California - San Diego State is USA Today’s choice to repeat for a fourth time as Mountain West regular-season champions. The prediction appears in the USA Today College Basketball Special Edition, which is on newsstands now.
The publication also has its 2017 Mountain West champs as a No. 12 seed in the West Region of the NCAA tournament. A Round of 64 match-up with No. 5-seed Oklahoma is first up for the Aztecs before falling to fourth-seeded Syracuse in the second round.
Individually, junior Trey Kell and sophomores Zylan Cheatham and Jeremy Hemsley were selected to the preseason all-MW second team. The trio will lead SDSU into its Mountain West opener vs. New Mexico on Jan. 1, which is one of three “Don’t Miss Games” by the publication.
The Aztecs, who are in their first week of practice, return three starters and eight letterwinners off a team that won the Mountain West regular season for a third straight year and won the league by three games. San Diego State ultimately advanced to the semifinals of the NIT, its 11th consecutive postseason appearance, and finished with a record of 28-10 (16-2 MW).
SDSU will be in action on Nov. 3, when it plays an exhibition game vs. UC San Diego. Tip time on Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena is set for 7 p.m. PT.
