Colorado Springs, Colorado - San Diego State women’s basketball was picked to finish eighth in the Mountain West and senior guard McKynzie Fort was named to the Mountain West Preseason All-Conference team in the preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced today.

During the 2016-17 season, Fort became just the fourth Aztec to garner a spot on an All-Mountain West team each of her first three seasons at San Diego State after collecting an All-Mountain West first team nod this year. The only Aztec to start all 30 games, Fort finished the year in the league rankings: second in points per game (15.9), ninth in free throw percentage (.784), 11th in field goal percentage (.436), 12th in minutes played per game (31.9) and 13th in assists per game (2.5). Additionally, the Fontana, Calif., native was 116-for-148 from the free throw line, tied for the eighth-most made in SDSU single-season history.

A kinesiology with a fitness specialist concentration, Fort reached the career 1,000-point mark at San José State (1-11-17), the 21st Aztec and eighth SDSU third-year to accomplish the feat, after notching season highs in points (29) and rebounds (11) for her second-career double-double.

After winning the Mountain West Tournament last season, Boise State was the favorite to repeat as the league champion with seven first-place votes and 221 points. Wyoming, who was the No. 2 seed at last year’s tournament, collected six first-place votes and 216 points for the second spot. Colorado State, the regular-season champion, garnered 211 votes and six first-place votes for third. 

For the 2017-18 campaign, San Diego State returns 78.9 percent of its scoring, nine letterwinners and four starters, including Fort, an All-Mountain West First-Team pick. The Aztecs will also welcome the 23rd-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to Prospects Nation, to Montezuma Mesa for head coach Stacie Terry’s fifth year.

San Diego State makes its first appearance of the season in an exhibition on Fri., Nov. 3 against Cal State L.A. Tip in Viejas Arena is set for 6:30 p.m.
