San Diego, California - San Diego State’s Tyler Roemer (Fernley, Nev.) and Tariq Thompson (San Diego/St. Augustine HS) were each named to the USA Today Freshman All-America team on Tuesday. The Aztecs are one of just five schools (also Arizona, Georgia, Northwestern and Wisconsin) with multiple athletes on the team.
Roemer, an offensive tackle, and Thompson, a safety, each earned second-team all-Mountain West honors by the league’s coaches and media, helping SDSU (10-2) to its third consecutive season with at least 10 victories.
Roemer, a redshirt freshman, started all 12 games at left tackle for San Diego State, blocking the blindside for quarterback Christian Chapman. Roemer has also blocked for an Aztec unit that has produced 11 100-yard rushing games by two different backs in 12 games, including Rashaad Penny’s FBS-leading 2,027 yards, and ranks ninth in FBS in time of possession (33:24) and 12th in rushing yards per game (252.3). According to Pro Football Focus, Roemer has allowed just three sacks in 317 pass snaps.
Thompson, a true freshman, has 54 tackles (39 solo), five interceptions for 83 yards, three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and three pass breakups. Thompson is tied for the MW lead and tied for 10th nationally in interceptions per game (0.42), and is the only freshman in the country this year with multiple interceptions in multiple games.
SDSU (10-2) will play Army West Point (9-3) in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, December 23 at 2:30 p.m. CT.
