San Diego, California - The San Diego State women’s tennis team is set for its second home dual of the week as it hosts Saint Mary’s (CA) on Saturday, March 10. First serve vs. the Gaels is set for noon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
St. Mary’s (5-5) recently fell out of the Oracle/ITA team top 50 rankings, but still boasts a ranked singles player and one ranked doubles duo. Just inside the top 100, freshman Mariia Kozyreva earned the No. 99 spot on the March 6 list, and joins doubles partner Hind Abdelouahid at No. 41 on the latest doubles rankings.
The Gaels enjoyed a two-week hiatus from competition following their 5-2 win at Sacramento State on Feb. 25. Following its match on the Mesa, St. Mary’s makes a trip across I-8 to open conference play at USD on Sunday, March 11.
The Aztecs snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-1 win over Furman on Tuesday to get to 7-7 on the season. The early-week win over the Paladins was fueled by success in doubles for top-seeded duo junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith, as well as seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz. Wins in the Aztecs’ bottom three singles matches by Moinard, and freshmen Nnena Nadozie and Magda Aubets secured the Scarlet and Black’s dual victory against Furman.
SDSU hopes to remain a threat in doubles after Tuesday’s win totaled nine doubles points claimed by the Aztecs this season. Following Saturday’s midday dual, the Aztecs look ahead to a neutral-site match against Dartmouth on Friday, March 16, just 26 miles north in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. First serve next Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club.
