Indianapolis, Indiana - Nine San Diego State athletes qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Preliminary Rounds, the USTFCCCA announced today. Additionally, Nicole Oudenaarden and Allison Reaser each earned a spot into the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon.
The nine Aztecs qualified for the preliminary championships by being a top-48 declared athlete in an event in the west region. The top-12 finishers in each event at the west preliminary rounds, which will take place from May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark., will then advance to the NCAA championship meet in Eugene, Ore., from June 11-14.
Oudenaarden and Reaser, meanwhile, officially became the first two SDSU athletes to make the championship meet as they are third and seventh, respectively, with 5,721 points and 5,637 points. Unlike the other events, there is no regional qualifier for the heptathlon, since it is a grueling, two-day competition. Instead, the top-24 declared heptathletes in the nation, regardless of region, earn the right to participate in Eugene.
Oudenaarden and Reaser are still going to Fayetteville, however, as both qualified in other events. Oudenaarden is tied for 25th in the long jump (19-11.50 (6.08m)) and 34th in the javelin throw (155-04 (47.35m)), while Reaser is tied for 21st in the 100 hurdles (altitude converted 13.49), 22nd in the 400 hurdles (58.78) and 46th in the 200 (24.03).
Shanieka Thomas leads the west region in the triple jump (45-00.50 (13.73m)) and ranks second in the nation in the event. Thomas, who has won the past two NCAA titles in the triple jump (2014 indoor, 2013 outdoor), is also tied for 29th in the long jump in the west region at 19-10.75 (6.06m).
Three others are declared in two events apiece, including Jasmine Burrell in the discus throw (10th, 181-05 (55.31m)) and shot put (17th, 52-06.50 (16.01m)), Kristen Brown in the pole vault (12th, 13-08.25 (4.17m)) and 100 hurdles (19th, altitude converted 13.45) and Meritzer Williams in the 200 (27th, altitude converted 23.76) and 100 (29th, altitude converted 11.58).
Brittany Bozeman is tied for 20th in the long jump (20-01.50 (6.13m)), while both Kortney Ross and Karen Snapper are into the west prelims in the pole vault, tied for 29th at 13-01.50 (4.00m).
San Diego State also qualified a 4x100-meter relay team, which is ranked 24th heading into next weekend’s meet with a converted time of 45.42. Last weekend at the MW Championships, which the Aztecs won for the second straight year, Williams, Oudenaarden, Reaser and Thomas took second in 45.14, which tied for the ninth-fastest time in program history.
SDSU is ranked 19th in the latest USTFCCCA computer rankings.
