San Diego, California - May is CalFresh Awareness Month in California. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and its community partners have several free events throughout the month where the public can get information about the program or apply for benefits.
CalFresh, formerly known as food stamps, is California’s federal food assistance program and is designed to help low-income families and individuals increase access to fresh and healthy food.
There are just over 280,000 San Diego County residents receiving CalFresh benefits, up 7.7 percent from last April.
Eligibility and the amount of benefits issued depend on your household size, income and certain living expenses.
