Poway, California - Are you one of the half of all Americans who own an e-reader or tablet? Maybe you got one for Christmas or your birthday but haven’t quite figured out how to use it to its full potential.

The San Diego County Library is bringing in one (very) large resource to help you download any and all of the 18,000 titles available in e-format from the library and finally put that e-reader to use.

A digital bookmobile, housed inside an 18-wheel tractor trailer, will be rolling into both the Poway Library and the County Operations Center next week to help out any residents looking to learn how to fill their e-reader with free books. The 74-foot vehicle is operated by OverDrive and teaming with the San Diego County Library to bring one-on-one assistance from library staff to readers.

“We’ve seen an increasing number of customers coming in each day asking about our e-book collection,” said Poway Branch Manager Penny Taylor. “We hope that the Digital Bookmobile will help customers explore this technology and feel more comfortable diving into our e-book collection.”

The vehicle is as equipped as it is large. Broadband Internet-connected PCs, high- definition monitors, premium sound systems and a variety of portable media players are stocked to allow visitors to explore the library’s download service. Interactive learning stations give guests an opportunity to search the library’s digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music and video.

A “gadget gallery” will feature multiple devices so you can learn to download books on whatever e-reader you have at home:

  • Kindle
  • iPod touch
  • Android tablet
  • NOOK
  • Sony Reader
  • BlackBerry
  • Windows Phone

Ready to load up your e-reader with free books? Visit the Digital Bookmobile from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on March 7 at the County Operations Center (5500 Overland Ave.) or from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on March 8 at the Poway Library (13137 Poway Road).
