Lakeside, California -  Last night, at about 10:55 PM, a deputy from the Santee Sheriff's Station attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Honda Accord bearing a license plate that was reported lost or stolen. Deputies later learned the vehicle was stolen from La Mesa.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Branden Espinoza (07-13-80) failed to stop near Mapleview Street and Maine Avenue in Lakeside. Espinoza and his female passenger fled in the vehicle. Espinoza drove southbound on Highway 67 then led deputies on a pursuit that lasted approximately fifteen minutes. The pursuit continued through Lakeside, Santee, El Cajon, and La Mesa. Near Grossmont College Drive and Highway 125, Espinoza made an illegal turn and struck a patrol car. No one was injured in the collision and Espinoza continued to drive the stolen vehicle. A spike strip was deployed by La Mesa Police and the vehicle's right front tire was flattened. Espinoza continued to drive the vehicle with the flat tire but eventually stopped near the intersection of Chatham and Witherspoon in La Mesa.

Espinoza and his passenger were taken into custody. Espinoza was arrested for charges including possession of stolen property, felony evading, possession of heroin for sales, a felon in possession of ammunition and a felony warrant. The passenger who was identified as Cortney Brackney (12-11-85) was also arrested for a warrant.
