San Diego, California - County Vector Control began hand-spraying to kill adult mosquitoes in a two-block area in the Mount Hope neighborhood after a person in the area tested positive for travel-related Zika virus.

County Vector Control inspectors found Aedes mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes near the person’s residence, and as a result, plan to spray early next week to kill any adult mosquitoes.

The pesticide Vector Control will use, Pyrenone® 25-5, poses low risks to people and pets. However, Vector Control’s teams will be wearing protective gear, and people are recommended to stay at least 30 feet away from people doing the spraying and the areas being sprayed for at least 30 minutes. It’s recommended to stay inside during the spraying, close all windows and keep your pets indoors.
