San Diego, California - Five San Diego State water polo players were named to the inaugural Golden Coast Conference All-Academic Team, the league announced Monday. The five honorees are the most for SDSU since 2011, when the program had six.
Juniors Carina Carballo and Anique Hermann, sophomores Taylor Gums and Claire McKinnon, and freshman Alyssa Diacono were the Aztecs’ representatives on the 64-member squad.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have carried a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, played in at least 50 percent of their team’s games during the most recent season and classified as a full-time student who completed one semester or two quarters at her institution.
No. 17 San Diego State finished the campaign with a 23-12 record and won the first-ever regular-season GCC championship. The Aztecs' 23 victories matched the 2013 total and represented the program's most since 2008 when that group won 31 games. SDSU has now won 20 or more games nine straight years.
