San Diego, California - The San Diego State women’s water polo team hits the road once again this week, traveling to Orange, California, for the Chapman Mini Invitational. The Aztecs will play three games on Saturday vs. Cal State East Bay, Connecticut College and Chapman.
SDSU (13-9) will first face Cal State East Bay (9-9) at 10 a.m. PT. The Pioneers are winners of five straight, with their last four coming in convincing fashion. Saturday’s showdown is the first-ever meeting between the schools.
In the second game of a tripleheader, the Aztecs will return to the pool in time for a 2:30 p.m. PT game vs. Connecticut College. The Camels head to southern California with a 4-1 record and winners of four in a row. Before facing SDSU, Connecticut College will play at Redlands on Tuesday, at Chapman on Thursday, at Concordia on Friday and at Chapman again before hopping into the pool with the Aztecs.
Then in the last game of the day, San Diego State will face a Chapman squad that is 5-11 on the season. Prior to its game with the Aztecs, the Panthers will play five games, four of which will be at home. In its last outing, Chapman fell to Cal Baptist, 17-3.
SDSU, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-2 weekend at its own Aztec Invitational. San Diego State fell to No. 20 Wagner, 6-5, before beating Harvard, 7-5, and Bucknell, 10-3. The Aztecs then dropped its finale to eighth-ranked Princeton, 7-4.
San Diego State enters this week’s action with Anique Hermann leading the squad in scoring with 33 goals. The junior also leads the team in assists and steals with 41 and 49, respectively. Freshman Ioli Benekou ranks second in goals with 30.
Following the Chapman Mini, SDSU will begin a four-game homestand on March 24, against Stanford. On March 29, San Diego State will play host to conference foe Fresno Pacific and Brown, before ending the homestand vs. LMU on April 5.
