La Jolla, California - Five members of the UC San Diego men’s water polo team were announced as members of the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Team Tuesday. UCSD’s honorees included sophomore Chase Cockerill, senior Tommy Friedrich, junior Dan Lorch, sophomore Tician Toplak and freshman Connor Watson.
The ACWPC placed 260 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team in 2013. Those who carried a 3.2 cumulative GPA, played in at least 50-percent of the team’s contests and were classified as a full-time student were honored. There were three different student-athlete merit levels: excellent (3.2-3.4), superior (3.41-3.7) and outstanding (3.71-4.0).
Cockerill, a political science/public law major, Toplak, a political science major, and Watson, an aerospace engineering major, were awarded superior honors. Friedrich, a graduate student and pacific international affairs major, and Lorch, a communication major, earned excellent honors.
It marked the first such career honor for Cockerill and Watson, while Friedrich, Lorch and Toplak were awarded for the second time.
The Tritons concluded the season 14-14 overall, earned their 16th WWPA Championship and made their 12th appearance at the National Collegiate Championship in 2013. UCSD finished the season ranked 11th nationally.
