La Jolla, California - The University of California San Diego men’s water polo team had nine players earn Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic honors, the association recently announced.
Sophomore Noah Carniglia (cognitive science/Sixth), junior Carson Ivancovich (public health/Warren) and freshman Brad Robison (mechanical engineering/Warren) each made the Superior List for grade-point-averages ranging from 3.41 to 3.70.
In addition, freshman Michael Gelnak (aerospace engineering/Marshall), sophomore Calder Hilde-Jones (marine biology/Roosevelt), senior Oleg Koujikov (electrical engineering/Marshall), junior Jack Turner (aerospace engineering/Revelle), junior Alessandro Valania (human development/Marshall) and sophomore Luka Vasiljevic (international business/Sixth) were each named to the Excellent List for GPA’s between 3.20 and 3.40.
The ACWPC placed 348 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team in 2017. To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA, play in at least 50 percent of the team’s games and are classified as a full-time student.
In addition to the Superior and Excellent Lists, there is also an Outstanding List for GPA’s ranging from 3.71 to 4.0.
UC San Diego finished the 2017 season with an 11-14 overall record and a 6-1 mark in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play en route to a runner-up finish at the WWPA Tournament.
