The Aztecs, who are looking to advance to a bowl game for a third consecutive season for the first time in school history, became bowl eligible on Saturday with a 24-13 victory over UNLV at Qualcomm Stadium. SDSU dominated the game, with a 206-yard advantage in total offense (506-300) and hefty time of possession (34:34-25:26) advantage.
Sophomore running back Adam Muema rushed for 143 yards and senior Walter Kazee carried for 105 yards and a touchdown. It marked the second time this season and the 16th time in the Division I era that two Aztec players rushed for 100 yards in a game (SDSU is 15-1 in those contests). Sophomore quarterback Adam Dingwell passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns and became the first Aztec QB to win his first start since Oct. 25, 1997 (previous 11 SDSU quarterback debuts had ended in a loss).
The Aztecs’ defense limited UNLV to 300 yards of total offense, including 189 after the first quarter. They also held the Rebels to 2-for-11 on third-down conversions. Sophomore linebacker Jake Fely earned Mountain West defensive player-of-the-week honors with 11 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. He’s the first SDSU player to be named a MW Defensive Player of the Week twice in the same year since 2006.
This marks the final meeting for the two schools as members of the Mountain West. Beginning next season, both San Diego State and Boise State will join the BIG EAST Conference for football.
