San Diego, California - Former San Diego Sockers goalkeeper Volkmar Gross has passed away in Berlin, Germany. He was 66 years old. The Sockers were informed of his passing earlier this week and want to extend condolences to his family and friends.
Gross played seven seasons as a professional goalkeeper in the German Bundesliga and made an appearance for the German National Team in goal in a friendly against Greece. He moved to the United States in 1979 and signed with the Minnesota Kicks of the North American Soccer League, but finished the year with San Diego and spent the next five seasons indoor and outdoor with the Sockers.
“I loved Volkmar,” said former teammate Juli Veee, “He was one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, a real friend and a great traveling companion. Volkmar was in goal for our first indoor championship. He was so good he could even send the great Alan Mayer to the bench.”
Gross retired from soccer in 1984 and moved back to Germany. He was living in Berlin at the time of his death.
