San Diego, California - The San Diego Sockers today announced the acquisition of forward Nick Perera, purchasing his rights from the Milwaukee Wave. The 28-year-old forward and U.S. Beach Soccer National Team star returns to the Sockers after spending 2011-14 with the Wave.

“Nick Perera is coming home,” said Sockers general manager John Kentera, “Even while he was in Milwaukee, we always kept track of Nick’s progress as a professional indoor soccer forward. He’s grown as a player and a person, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome him back into the fold.”

“Returning to the Sockers is a family decision,” said Perera, who was recently married to his longtime girlfriend Michelle, “Most importantly my family is in San Diego and wanted me to play at home, but this franchise and everyone involved has also been like family to me. When I left three years ago I never felt far away. I watched every Sockers game online and trained with the guys when I got home. They've treated me exceptionally well and I'm very excited to come back home and play for the most successful franchise in indoor soccer.”

Originally from Madrid, Spain, Perera--a collegiate outdoor star at UC Santa Barbara--played in six games with the Sockers in their PASL championship 2010-11 campaign; scoring five goals with eight assists (13 points). Joining Milwaukee in 2011-12, Perera spent three seasons with the Wave, tallying 52 goals and 38 assists in 69 games.

“My time with Milwaukee Wave was pivotal in helping me grow as a player,” said Perera, “Keith Tozer, and the talented squad of players, demanded another level of commitment from me. I learned to always work for the good of the team, defend like my life depended on it, and that good is the enemy of great. Above all I learned that winning is a mentality and that together--as a team--you can accomplish anything.”

“Nick is a big pickup for the Sockers,” said head coach Phil Salvagio, “We needed to replace some firepower up front with the retirement of (17 year veteran) Aaron Susi. Nick is family, and let’s not forget, he’s a pretty good player too.”

In addition to his indoor exploits, Perera has been selected the past two seasons to play with the U.S. Beach Soccer Men’s National Team. He led Team USA with five goals during their appearance at the 2013 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

Perera and the Sockers will embark on their inaugural Major Arena Soccer League season on November 1st when they take on the rival Las Vegas Legends at the Valley View Casino Center. For more information on the Sockers or to order season tickets call (866) 799-GOAL.
