La Jolla, California - The No. 11 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team kept its momentum going on Friday night, defeating Sonoma State, 15-4, at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
Freshman Robyn Carter, freshman Tera Richardson, junior Carly Innis, junior Halley Atkinson and senior Kayla Fedler each scored two goals apiece for the Tritons, while senior Colleen Ratcliff, freshman Sydney Boland, freshman Grace Pevehouse, freshman Taylor Onstott and junior Chanel Schilling also scored one goal each.
UC San Diego (14-9, 2-0 WWPA) raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter before taking a commanding 9-2 advantage into halftime. The Tritons added four more goals in the third quarter before cruising to their fifth-straight victory.
Fedler got UC San Diego on the scoreboard early in the first quarter before Schilling’s goal with 3:07 left in the period put the Tritons ahead, 2-1. UCSD’s 5-0 run into the second quarter was capped off by Onstott’s goal with 7:02 left in the first half, which extended the Tritons’ lead to 6-2.
UC San Diego resumes its busy weekend of action on Saturday, as the Tritons get set to compete in the Aztec Invitational beginning with a matchup against Bucknell beginning at 12:30 p.m.
