San Diego, California - Led by eight teams setting program records for highest multi-year rates, San Diego State set a school-record with a department average of 980 in the Academic Progress Report (APR) released by the NCAA.  Among those programs that scored record multi-year APR figures were football, men’s basketball and baseball.

Rancho Bernardo, California - The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is working alongside other first responders in battling the Bernardo Fire. So far, the fire has burned around 850 acres since it broke out just before 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13th in the 4S Ranch area. The flames have spread to the west, prompting evacuations in Fairbanks Ranch and Eastern Rancho Santa Fe.

Washington, DC - "In today’s nationwide takedown, scores of defendants were arrested across the country for engaging in health care fraud – to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in fraudulent bills to Medicare.   Among the defendants charged today were doctors, home health care providers, doctor’s assistants, pharmacy owners and medical supply company executives.   The crimes charged represent the face of health care fraud today – doctors billing for services that were never rendered, supply companies providing motorized wheelchairs that were never needed, recruiters paying kickbacks to get Medicare billing numbers of patients.   The fraud was rampant, it was brazen, and it permeated every part of the Medicare system.

San Diego, California - Preliminary statistics released today by the FBI show that 27 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2013, a decrease of more than 44 percent when compared to the 49 officers killed in 2012.

San Diego, California - A former contractor for the Department of Defense, who pleaded guilty late last year, was sentenced Friday to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine on charges related to the removal of classified materials following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service.
