Mexican fruit fly quarantine

Los Angeles, California - A portion of Los Angeles County, including the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, has been placed under quarantine for the Mexican fruit fly following the detection of three flies, including two mated females, within the City of Long Beach.  Mated females are significant because they indicate a breeding population that increases the risk of spread of this pest. CDFA is working collaboratively on this project with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office. 

Former Genentech Employees Charged With Theft Of Trade Secrets

San Francisco, California - A federal grand jury indicted Xanthe Lam, Allen Lam, John Chan, and James Quach for stealing trade secrets from Genentech and related charges, announced United States Attorney Alex G. Tse and FBI Special Agent in Charge John F. Bennett. The indictment, handed down on October 25, 2018, and unsealed today, alleges that the defendants stole confidential Genentech information to help a company in Taiwan create and sell drugs similar to those that were created by Genentech.

Californian heads FFA officer team elected at 91st National FFA Convention & Expo

Sacramento, California - Luke O’Leary, a Californian and agricultural leadership and development major at Texas A&M University, has been elected FFA national president at the organization’s 91st annual national event. He receives the gavel from 2017-18 National President Breanna Holbert, also a Californian.

South Bay Doctor Indicted For Unlawfully Distributing Hydrocodone

San Jose, California - A federal grand jury has indicted South Bay doctor Venkat Aachi, charging him with distributing hydrocodone outside the scope of his professional practice and without a legitimate medical need, and with health care fraud related to the submission of false and fraudulent claims regarding the health care benefits, announced United States Attorney Alex G. Tse, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in Charge Chris Nielsen, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge John F. Bennett, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG) Special Agent in Charge Steven J. Ryan.

Governor Brown and Attorney General Becerra to Honor Public Safety Medal of Valor Recipients

Sacramento, California - Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. and Attorney General Xavier Becerra will present the Medal of Valor award to five public safety officials tomorrow in Sacramento, including officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department.

Valley Springs Man Sentenced To 25 Years

Fresno, California - Nicholas Carroll Watkins, 30, of Valley Springs, was sentenced Monday by Chief U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release for receiving material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.  Watkins will also be required to register as a sex offender.
